Italy and Russian gas

Although winter in Europe has ended, certain countries are already making preparations for the next year. Italy has recently taken a significant step towards achieving energy independence from Russia by receiving its first regasification vessel in the city of Piombino on the country’s western coast. This vessel is considered vital for securing Italy’s energy supply and reducing its dependence on Russia.

Prior to the Ukrainian invasion, around 40% of Italy’s gas imports came from Russia, but this has now decreased to less than 10%. Without the regasification vessel importing liquefied natural gas, Italy could face energy supply challenges in the coming winter.

Despite the benefits of the regasification vessel, local activists have organized protests due to concerns about its potential impact on the city, fishing, and tourism. Therefore, it’s crucial for officials to find a common ground between the industry and citizens to ensure energy supply and the survival of the local community.
